Myofascial Release Therapy

Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying sustained pressure into the connective tissue restriction to eliminate pain and restore motion. It treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. This essential “time element” has to do with the viscous flow and the piezoelectric phenomenon: a low load (gentle pressure) applied slowly will allow a viscoelastic medium (fascia) to elongate.

Trauma, inflammatory responses, and/or surgical procedures create scare tissue and restrictions that can produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain sensitive structures that do not show up in many of the standard tests (x-rays, myelograms, CAT scans, electromyography, etc.)

The use of Myofascial Release allows us to look at each patient as a unique individual. We promote independence through education in proper body mechanics and movement, self-treatment instruction, enhancement of strength, improved flexibility, and postural and movement awareness.

How do overuse injuries occur?

Overused muscles change in three significant ways:

  • Traumatic/acute conditions – sprains and strains, tears, collisions, etc.

  • Cumulative trauma – accumulation of small tears that cause “wear and tear”

  • Hypoxia – lacking oxygen

These factors cause your body to produce dense scar tissue in the affected area. The scar tissue binds up and limits the tissues ability to move freely (like dry paint left on the bristles of the brush). Scar tissue causes muscles to become shorter and weaker. Tension on tendons causes tendonitis and nerves can become trapped. This can cause decreased ranges of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve becomes trapped you may feel burning, tingling, numbness, and weakness.
